Learning Sequence

Every lesson that takes place within our academy follows the ‘Flight of the Kite’. This process has been adapted using Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction.

Subject leaders have adapted their subject expectations to ensure all lessons can follow this sequence to allow children to become familiar with the process to successful learning.

Sticky words and vocabulary are carefully selected to ensure children can retain specific information required to access the learning content on their year group.

4.1 Reactivate

Every lesson starts with a daily review of previous learning. This could be requiring children to draw upon yesterday’s, last week’s, last term’s, last year’s or last key stage’s learning from their long-term memory.

4.2 Teach

Teachers are required and skilled in presenting new material in smaller steps, whilst asking lots of questions using ‘Turn and Talk’ and cold calling techniques. During this stage, teachers model using worked examples whilst talking out loud to identify the specific steps, children will shortly be practising.

4.3 Guided

After several opportunities to see modelled examples, pupils will be guided to rehearse the new learning. They will be prompted to rephrase, elaborate and summarise new material in groups, talk partners or independently. Throughout this time, teachers will be checking understanding using hinge questions and multiple choices opportunities.

4.4 Independent

Now, children have the opportunity to independently apply their new material to a challenge. This might be scaffolded for some learners, who might receive models, cue cards or checklists. However, all children will access the same tasks.

4.5 Reflect

To summarise their new learning, pupils might be prompted to link their new learning material with a subject specific skill to support this new concept in embedding itself into the pupils’ long term memory.
